Dan called the meeting to order at 8:25. He reminded us of the topics left from the previous meeting: Wed. Warriors dinners, Confirmation classes, Book box, mowing, backpack blessing and Aug. 3 – Children’s Sabbath.

Nurture Report – Jeanne Judge

  • The adult Sunday School class is rotating teachers and it is working well.
  • Blessing of the backpacks is today, July 27, in the service.
  • Warriors starts back Aug. 20. Meals for the first couple months are covered.
  • The confirmation class will be held during Wed. Warrior time. Not sure who will be in it.
  • Pastor and Jeanne visited Lois Sartain at the Owens Cross Rds. Home. Cheryl came while they were there and it was a good visit.
  • We need to think about a Musician replacement (Susan brought this up.) John is a junior this year.
  • Doug Wheatley told Jeanne that the Lincoln County Fair is Sept. 13-14, and we should keep that in mind when planning Fall Festival.

Outreach – Deb Moriarity

Had a written report. Key points:

  • Adopt-A-Mile application is sent in for the mile from Maysville Rd. to Oscar Patterson Rd. on Winchester Rd.
  • We will be getting our logo redone and be getting a t-shirt order put together.
  • Erich and Emma Spragg will be building the book box to put out at the church. It will be near the labyrinth and we will put a picnic table there as well. Also a sign about the labyrinth and parking designation.
  • We think the church should be considering being a cooling and heating center for severe temps. Problem may be getting the people who need it to the church.
  • We will see if we can get the ShowerUp mobile showers to come to the Arnold Rd. area. We can collect toiletries to give out.
  • Webinar Deb attended on Church Growth had some good info:
    • Digital is the new front door to your church. We need to do better with this.
    • Where you money is, there is your heart. WE need to designate more of our budget to Outreach. Should be at least 3% and we are at 0.96%.
    • People get impression of your church in the first 5 min. = cleanliness, orderliness, ease of parking, finding bathrooms, etc. Friendliness,
    • After that then music quality, friendliness and preaching sty le are important.
    • We need to get our building cleaned up and get some maintenance done.
  • Outreach Inc offers some subscription services that might be useful. Especially Direct Mailing to people moving into the area.
  • Movie Night on the patio was suggested aw a substitute for the back to school pool party. Tonya has a projector and we have a big screen. We will check that all out and next week and see if it will work. We would provide popcorn.
  • Tara also suggested having a food truck, like Kona Ice, come to our church and we get a part of the profits. They could come to the movie event and perhaps on a regular basis so people got used to them coming here.

Finance – Don Bowyer

  • 34 giving units.
    • 15% give at least $700 per month
    • We are covering salaries and utilities
    • Parsonage rent needs to go up

Witness – Patty Lane

Confirmation class curriculum has been chosen.

Trustees – David Odom

  • Damaged tree at the parsonage will be coming down. It will cost $500. It will be cut into pieces and David, Aaron and George will get it moved to the curb.
  • We need to get a new door handle for the church. David will try to get one.
  • We haven’t hired anyone to do the yard maintenance. It was decided to have church people sign up to do it. (I list was passed around through covering August and it was filled) Approximately a 10 day rotation.
  • The interior church walls where the paint bubbled have to be repaired.
  • We need to get the big outside sign converted to LED and working again.

SPRC – Mike Stokes

  • Mike reported that employee evaluations (secretary and Pastor) will be done in Sept. He has the forms ready.

Food Pantry – Ruth King

  • 5466 lbs of food given out in June. 345 people: 255 adults, 114 children, 76 seniors. !21 households were served.
  • They need help but usage is up and down and they don’t know when the need volunteers to help with packing and distribution.

Meeting was adjourned at 9:50 AM

Church Council Meeting

July 27, 2025

Agenda

The work of the Church Council is to envision, plan, implement, and annually evaluate a congregation’s ministry and mission. From Guidelines for Leading Your Congregation 2025–2028, we can take a brief look at each of the three main points over first three meetings.  In February, we considered the topic of envisioning and planning. In March, we considered implementation. In April, we thought about evaluating.

Please send agenda items, additions, or corrections to Dan Rochowiak at rochowd@uah.edu
